Abstract

For the diamond N-V center results of optically detected magnetic resonance experiments are reported using narrow-band laser excitation. Strain-induced splittings of the 3A ground state are observed in the ODMR spectra. In addition, an internal strain-induced lifting of the orbital degeneracy in the excited 3E state is observed. Time-resolved experiments yield an upper limit for the characteristic time for internal conversion between the strain split E + and E − excited states of 10 −9 s.
