Abstract

South Africa is situated on the southern tip of Africa. It is a relatively large country—about 1.2 million km2 and a population of around 50 million people who speak 11 national languages. One of these is English and another, Afrikaans, originated here in Africa, forged by the interactions between Dutch settlers and various non-European cultures. Most South Africans speak English as a second language; this is the language of Parliament, official documents, and communications. The country is divided into nine provinces and has three capital cities: Cape Town, Pretoria, and Bloemfontein. A map detailing the provinces, capital cities, and other towns of interest is shown in Figure 1. The distance between Cape Town and Pretoria is about 1,313 km. South Africa is a popular tourist destination, with a long coastline, numerous public and private game parks, and Table Mountain among the top attractions.
