Abstract

Dielectric relaxation studies of some ethylene oxide condensation products i.e., mono methyl, mono ethyl, and mono butyl ethers of ethylene glycol and of diethylene glycol, dimethyl and diethyl ethers of ethylene glycol and dimethyl, diethyl and dibutyl ethers of diethylene glycol in pure liquid state have been carried out in the x- and k-band microwave frequency region at 35° C. The dispersion curves for these molecules are Cole-Cole arcs. The macroscopic relaxation time and distribution parameter have been determined from these arcs. The relaxation time and weight factor corresponding to overall rotation of the molecule and group rotation have been analysed. The dependence of these relaxation times on viscosity and molecular size have been discussed. A comparison has been made with the dielectric behaviour of these molecules in dilute solutions of benzene, which were carried out earlier in this laboratory. The effect of hydrogen bonding on dielectric relaxation in these molecules have also been discussed.
