Abstract

Abstract The laboratory and field tests have demonstrated that microwave radiation can break oil-water-solid emulsions, and recover oil from oily sludge and bottoms sediment and water (BS&W). As a result, this innovative microwave technology provides a new option in the minimization of waste and resource recovery in petroleum industry. Test samples include crude oil-water emulsions and waste sludge from a gas compressor station. Separations of oil from water by the gravity sedimentation, conventional heating and microwave radiation are compared. There are cases that microwave radiation shows faster separation than that by other two conventional methods.
