Abstract

We present an initial report on the design and performance of a device which combines the heating and coagulating effects of a microwave field with the surgical scalpel. The device is intended to control hemorrhage in the surgical treatment of highly vascular organs such as the spleen and liver. Preliminary experiments in splenic surgery using dogs have indicated the utility of this technique.
