Abstract

We investigated the influence of microwave (MW) irradiation on the synthesis of N-(2-acetoxy-ethyl-)maleimide (5) from its corresponding maleamic acid using acetic anhydride as a solvent. The obtained product was transesterificated with methacrylic acid by MW irradiation to obtain bifunctional maleimides in excellent yields. Free radical homo-polymerisation of 5 in toluene with AIBN was carried out additionally. The resulting polymer was characterized by GPC, 1H-NMR-spectroscopy and MALDI-TOF-mass spectrometry.
