Abstract

The “La Chapelle” archaeological site at Jau-Dignac et Loirac in the Lower Médoc region of the Gironde estuary in south-western France lies in a unique and unstable environment. Despite the difficulties arising from the instability of the site, La Chapelle has produced evidence of four main settlement periods, from antiquity to the modern period. To find out whether the settlement was continuous at the site and how the populations organised their burial areas, we studied 24 nonmetric dental variations in two populations buried at the site: one dating from the High Middle Ages and another from the Late Middle Ages to the modern period. Results clearly point to the existence of a subgroup within the High Middle Ages group, but they also, and especially, suggest continuous settlement at the site.
