Abstract

The microviscosity of the yeast cell interior determined by a fluorimetric method is 13.6 cp. Treatment with 0.5% phenethyl alcohol increases viscosity to 15 cp and increases calcium content fivefold. Phenethyl alcohol at low concentrations causes reversible increase in cell membrane permeability to fluorescein.
