Abstract
Impaired speech development and inhibited maxilla growth are major concerns in the treatment of children with cleft lips. Using microsurgery, the muscles of the soft palate are detached from the bone and sown together to reconstruct the muscle sling of the soft palate(1). In addition, lateral release incisions(2) are avaoided, which proved invaluable in the reconstruction of the soft palate. This retrospective study analyses the benefits of this surgical technique in terms of maxilla growth, speech development and the middle ear functionality.
