Abstract

Objective To study the operative indications,modalities and factors influencing the effectiveness of operation in large arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). Methods Sixteen patients were large AVMs,male 11,female 5.The major symptoms were intracranial hemorrhage in 6 cases,seizures in 6 cases.The mean largest diameter of AVMs was 7.75 cm.The microsurgical procedures were operated on in all these cases.Of these cases,2 cases carried on the preoperative endovascular embolizations.Two cases were operated on in two procedures.Results No death of these cases.One case with continued coma before operation was recovered a little.And the other cases were recovered very well.There were 12 cases of total remove of AVMs,and 4 cases of subtotal remove.Two cases were treated with Gamma knife after operation.Conclusions The large AVMs is a difficult disease to treat with high dangerousness. Under the circumstances of good technique and well preoperative preparations,most large AVMs can be totally removed with microsurgical procedures.
