Abstract

The effect of Ti/Ni ratio on the microstructure, phase transformation characteristics and damping capacity of TiNiNbMo quaternary alloys was investigated by scanning electron microscope, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analyser. The microstructure observation showed that eutectic is weakened by the increase in the Ti/Ni ratio. The DSC test indicated that TiNiNbMo alloys with different Ti/Ni ratios exhibit multistage transformations including R transformation and B19′ martensite transformation, and the phase transformation temperature range was increased during cooling or heating. Meanwhile, when the Ti/Ni ratio is equal to 1·08, the alloy in martensite phase exhibited much higher damping than that of Ti50·1Ni49·9 binary alloy, which is mainly attributed to the precipitation of fine and dispersed β-Nb particles in the prime NiTi phases.
