Abstract
A series of (50Zr–50Ti)-xNi alloys were prepared by employing the vacuum arc melting method within a furnace. The phase composition and microstructure of the (50Zr–50Ti)-xNi alloys were analyzed by performing TEM, XRD measurements and other microscopic analysis methods. In addition, the mechanical and corrosion properties of the (50Zr–50Ti)-xNi alloys were analyzed by carrying out both compression and electrochemical tests. By increasing the Ni content, an enhancement in the (Zr–Ti)2Ni Laves phase content of the alloy was detected. Compared with the Zr–Ti binary alloy, the compressive ductility of the (50Zr–50Ti)-xNi alloys is decreased, while both exhibit brittle fracture. However, both the elastic modulus and yield strength of the (50Zr–50Ti)-xNi alloys with Ni element are significantly increased, and part of the alloy's compressive strength is improved. The alloy has a maximum compressive strength of 1615 MPa and a maximum yield strength of 1075 MPa. The corrosion resistance of the alloys are also significantly improved due to the stabilizing effect of the Ni element on the passivation film. The alloy has the best corrosion resistance when the Ni content is 4 at%.
