Abstract
Gradient structured materials have attracted considerable attention among material scientists because of their excellent mechanical and functional properties. Here, a modified rolling deformation technique, i.e., rolling with a pair of corrugated rollers, was used to form gradient structure in hcp Zr. The microstructure evolution and grain refinement mechanism during rolling were investigated. And a typical gradient structure with a gradient layer of ~ 1 mm in depth was yielded in the upper and lower surface of Zr plate. The novel surface corrugation rolling technique provides an alternative and industrial way to produce gradient metallic materials and thus is of wide interests.
