Abstract

It is found that 0.5–0.7 wt% of Ir, Ru Hf, Ta added to pure Y123 phase strongly reduce the amount of secondary 211 phase. X-ray analysis of the produced samples showed no more than 3 wt% of 211, while the standard melt-processed YBCO usually contains up to 20 wt%. The microstructure of the obtained melt-processed samples reveals characteristic periodic morphology, when the trapped bands enriched in the corresponding chemical addition separate the regions of the Y123 phase. The reduction of 211 was found to be detrimental to the mechanical properties of the samples. The melt processing performed in oxygen flowing atmosphere shows promising results in improving mechanical strength of YBCO with periodic growth.
