Abstract

In the present work low index single crystal surfaces of a binary Fe-Al alloy were oxidized in atmospheric air at 700 °C. The oxide layer composition, microstructure and texture were investigated by XPS, TEM and XRD. The oxidation stresses were determined in situ by synchrotron XRD. The results revealed the presence of a dual layered oxide scale, consisting of an inner layer of α-Al2O3 and an external layer of α-Fe2O3 and α-Al2O3. Differences in crystal orientation led to variations in the internal stress distribution in the oxide scales, with compressive stress values α-Al2O3 following (110) > (111) > (100).
