Abstract
In this paper, the effects of thermal exposure on the microstructure and wear behavior of the Al-10 wt. % Ti alloy have been investigated. The as-extruded material contains Al 3Ti particles homogeneously distributed in the α-Al matrix. Al 3Ti particles coarsened during thermal exposure at 630 °C, via a diffusional growth mechanism. Block-on-ring tests under dry sliding conditions show that the alloy exhibits a transition from mild wear to severe wear with increasing applied load. In the low load regime wear is controlled by a combination of delamination and oxidation, and at high load severe adhesion occurs. Thermal exposure reduces wear resistance of the alloy due to coarsening of Al 3Ti particles.
