Abstract

In this work, the powders of AlCrFeCoNi high entropy alloy were prepared by gas atomization. The 10 AlCrFeCoNi/WC and 20 AlCrFeCoNi/WC (mass. %) composite powders obtained by mechanical milling. The bulk samples were fabricated through low-pressure sintering at 1300 °C, 1400 °C and 1450 °C. The microstructure and mechanical properties of AlCrFeCoNi/WC cemented carbides were studied using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Vickers hardness and compression testing. The results show that precipitation of Al from AlCrFeCoNi alloy causes the BCC-to-FCC transformation of high entropy alloy. Growth of WC grains was inhibited by adding the high entropy alloy. The 10 AlCrFeCoNi/WC cemented carbide exhibited the excellent hardness and compressive strength. After sintering for 2 h at 1400 °C, the hardness of 10 AlCrFeCoNi/WC cemented carbide reached 2160 HV and the compressive strength is up to 4395 MPa.
