Abstract

This paper presents a study on the microstructure and pore characteristics of virgin and partially clogged non-woven geotextile filters under confinement using different experimental techniques. Geotextiles commonly found in practice were tested under normal stresses up to 1 MPa and pore dimensions and constriction sizes evaluated by the bubble point test, hydrodynamic sieving test and image analyser. The evaluation of the accuracy of theoretical methods for the prediction of filtration opening sizes of geotextiles under pressure was also assessed. The results obtained show a marked influence of stress level and partial clogging on the filter pore sizes and retention capability, and extend current guidance regarding current filter criteria for geotextiles.
