Abstract

Self-synthesized and commercial alumina (boehmite, γ-Al2O3, α-Al2O3) powders were consolidated using an identical spark plasma sintering cycle, and optically translucent samples were obtained. The benefit of higher pressure is remarkable grain growth suppression. Additionally, the shorter dwell time at higher pressure advantageously leads to a reduction in grain size while conserving the optical transparency and without affecting the density.
