Abstract

In this study, a Lap-Butt joint (LBJ) of ultra-thin galvanized steel sheets with satisfactory joint properties had been produced by friction lap welding (FLW) using a pinless tool. The LBJ had a lap form but with the butt joint thickness and without the altitude intercept at back side. The LBJ was produced by the smooth material flow and plastic deformation of the top sheet. An interlayer consisting of Fe and Fe3Zn10 was observed at the interface. The dynamic recrystallization zone (DRZ) and heat affected zone (HAZ) were observed in the LBJs. The influences of FLW parameters on microstructural change and shear strength were investigated. The maximum fracture load of LBJ is equivalent to 95% fracture load of the base metal. The grain refinement induced by dynamic recrystallization increased the strength of top sheet.
