Abstract

Abstract : In this review paper the influence of microstructure on the following aspects of mechanical behavior was considered, (1) elastic deformation, (2) anelastic behavior, (3) plastic deformation, (4) brittle fracture, and (5) high temperature deformation and creep. In addition to familiar variables such as grain size and the presence and distribution of porosity or a second phase, the term microstructure was considered broadly enough to allow discussion of the role that fundamental variables such as crystal structure, bond character and crystalline defects, impurities, vacancies and dislocations play in determining mechanical behavior.
