Abstract
In the present work, a small amount of Fe was added in the Gd50Co50 binary amorphous alloys and obtained a series of as-spun ribbons with nominal compositions Co50Gd50-xFex (x = 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5). Amongst these ribbons, the Co50Gd50-xFex (x = 1, 2, 3 and 4) ribbons exhibit amorphous characteristics in the X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and glassy nature of the samples was confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The XRD confirms the non-crystalline structure and DSC shows the presence of glass transition temperature (Tg), confirming the vitreous properties. However, magnetic measurements indicate that some of the amorphous ribbons show multi-stage magnetic ordering behaviors. Microstructural observation of these amorphous ribbons was carried out to reveal the mechanism involved. The effect of microstructure on the magnetic and magnetocaloric behaviors of the as-spun ribbons was investigated.
