Abstract

We present study of microstructure and magnetic properties of bulk melt-textured (Sm 0.33Eu 0.33Gd 0.33)Ba 2Cu 3O y “SEG-123” superconductors with 30 mol% of fine Gd-211 particles. To improve flux pinning performance at 77 K, Gd-211 particles of various sizes were added to the SEG-123 matrix before melt-texture growth. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the homogeneity of 211 particle dispersion improved with increasing sub-micron size of initially added 211 powder. At the same time, the self-field critical current density, J c improved and reached 107 kA/cm 2 at 77 K ( H a∥ c-axis). The size of Gd-211 particles did not affect pinning force density in high fields.
