Abstract
Present study aims at microstructural modification in hypereutectic Al-20Si by addition of nano-AlN and nano-TiN through stir casting method followed by isothermal heat treatment. Different samples were then characterized metallographically and mechanical properties were evaluated. Results indicate drastic modification in microstructure in the nano-composite. This is attributed to the presence of AlN and TiN nano-particles which acted as nucleating agents. Moreover, divorced eutectic formation in the nano-composite resulted in reduction in aspect ratio of eutectic Si in the nano-composite. UTS increased by overall 81 %, 0.2 % YS by 85 % and % strain by 74 % in the heat treated nano-composite. Refinement of primary Si spheroidisation of eutectic Si resulted in improvement in strength and ductility both.
