Abstract

The microstructural change of Ni 40Zr 60 alloy during mechanical alloying of mixtures of the intermetallic compounds NiZr 2 and Ni 11Zr 9 has been studied by transmission electron microscopy. A specific “cauliflower” phase was formed during early stage of mechanical alloying process. It is suggested that the solid state reaction between intermetallic compounds NiZr 2 and Ni 11Zr 9 is not the only origin for the formation of the “cauliflower” phase.
