Abstract

Microstructure in Alnico8 thermomagnetically treated for various times at 800°C was studied by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). TEM observations indicated that the microstructure was refined and homogenized with increasing treating times, and the larger Fe–Co-rich phase particles were broken into smaller ones, which was caused by the large elastic distortion energy. It is the first time that the stability bifurcation phenomenon was observed in Alnico8 with the complex chemical composition. The fine and homogeneous microstructure led to a considerable improvement in magnetic properties of the alloy.
