Abstract

The TiNi binary system under non-equilibrium conditions offers an exciting range of metastable microstructures including nanodispersions in glassy and crystalline matrices. We report a systematic study of these microstructures and phase stability for a wide range (10–90 at.%) of rapidly solidified TiNi binary alloys. This study has revealed the nature of the metastable phase equilibria and kinetic pathways for liquid-solid transformation in undercooled TiNi melts during rapid solidification.
