Abstract

Bainitic ductile irons either as-cast or austempered offer high strength with high ductility. Tensile strengths in excess of 850 MN/m2 and elongations up to 10% can be obtained. These relatively new ductile irons are now finding increased industrial applications. The present paper describes the effect of heat treatment and alloy composition on the microstructure of these irons and relates this to the final properties obtained.
