Abstract

In this study, the flash sintering of a ZrO2/25 vol% Al2O3 (ZrO2/Al2O3) composite was analysed by varying the electric field and current density. The best sample obtained with flash sintering (FS) was compared with samples conventionally sintered via single-step (SS) and two-step (TS) techniques. The results showed that an electric field of 200 Vcm−1 with a current density of 106 mAmm−2 produced the optimal results for FS. These conditions resulted in a high relative density with a grain size comparable to that obtained with SS while utilizing a much lower furnace temperature than that for SS of this composite.
