Abstract

Abstract This paper examines the macro- and microstructural characteristics of perforating projectiles type Armour Piercing Discarding Sabot (APDS) 20 mm, after being detained by armour plates normally used as defence against projectiles. The effect of impact of these projectiles against high density alumina tiles with several materials of backing plate (steel, alumina and composite) is studied to determine the structural modifications of these projectiles by microhardness and image analysis. The results provide data for studies of simulation of impacts in the design of armour plating.
