Abstract

The long-shoot terminal bud of lodgepole pine (Pinuscontorta Dougl.) consists of spirally arranged cataphylls which may be sterile or fertile. The cataphylls which bear microstrobili are just above the most proximal few sterile cataphylls. The average number of microstrobili per shoot is 15; bud scales per microstrobilus is 7.8; microsporophylls per microstrobilus is 137.9; and pollen grains per microsporangium is 2103. It is estimated that each microstrobilus produces about 590 000 pollen grains and each shoot about 8.9million grains.
