Abstract

In this paper, a patch antenna for ultrawideband applications is presented. The design and performance of the antenna element is discussed. The proposed antenna is mounted on a compact FR-4 substrate having dimensions $\mathbf{20}\mathbf{x}\mathbf{30}\mathbf{x}\mathbf{1.6} \ \mathbf{mm3}$ with relative permittivity $\pmb\varepsilon \mathbf{r}=\mathbf{4.3}$ . The rectangular patch antenna is slotted with two types; rectangular and semi-circle slots. The results show that the antenna covers the frequency range of 3.1-7.5 GHz with a reflection coefficient reduced to −55 dB and a gain of 5.9 dB. The details of the simulated and measured results for reflection coefficient are presented. To analyze the effect of the slots, the surface current distribution is investigated. The performances of good impedance matching are achieved within the operating band. Simulation is carried out using CST Microwave Studio. The proposed antenna can be used for UWB applications and other radio communication services systems.
