Abstract

ObjectiveTo report the cases of stromal keratitis secondary to microsporidium in our institution, as well as performing a literature review to update the knowledge about the available treatments and diagnostic methods. MethodsWe compiled 4 cases of stromal keratitis secondary to microsporidium with complete histologic data. We performed an exhaustive literature review about this subject. ResultsMicroscopic examination of the 4 cases showed with hematoxylin and eosin, groups of numerous round to oval organisms in the corneal stroma, positive with Ziehl-Neelsen and toluidine blue staining. ConclusionWe conclude that this entity still represents a major ophthalmologic problem due to its indolent course and the bad response to known treatments, together with the fact that there is not a widely accepted diagnostic tool that allows an accurate diagnosis without invasive procedures.
