Abstract

The tribological failure sequence of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and carbon-fiber-reinforced PTFE was investigated by means of microstructural observation and wear rate measurement under air and water lubricants. A morphological model of the detailed wear processes involved is presented to explain the observed scanning and transmission electron micrographs and the model is correlated with the measured wear rate data.
