Abstract

The observed dramatic onset of backbending in $^{104}$,106Pd isotopes is examined by carrying out a variational calculation of the high-spin yrast spectra. Our calculation reveals that the observed backbending effect in $^{104}$,106Pd isotopes is intimately linked with the occurrence of sharp structural changes in the yrast spectrum of $^{104}$,106Pd because of a sudden increase in deformation due to crossing of ${\mathit{h}}_{11/2}$, \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1/2 and \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}(3/2 levels at the Fermi surface.
