Abstract

At rest, urban agglomerations are characterized by concentrating a large number of vehicles in a confined space, while usually there is not possible to increase extensively the range of the road communications, but it is necessary to achieve their better utilisation and better quality of transport. The traffic in urban agglomerations is optimised mainly for two groups of users: (1) individual traffic and (2) public transport. Creation of successful management means to integrate and to optimise the quality of transport. When intersection signal control is used, not only the high degree of safety is ensured, but also permeability of the intersection increases. But when there are several signal controlled intersections on the one route, the control of the intersections can act like a brake of the traffic flow. For better and more effective use of the network the coordinated road traffic control and the higher intelligent control of the intersections (central traffic control) is used. In this paper we would like to evaluate on the basis of microscopic simulation the coordination of the signal controlled intersections in the city of Žilina. For the simulation the Aimsun is used.
