Abstract
Adiabatic time dependent Hartree-Fock theory is applied to describe the excitation of giant resonances in heavy ion collisions. Equations similar to, but more general than those of Broglia, Dasso and Winther are derived. The excitation of the giant quadrupole mode is found to be too weak to explain the structures observed in calcium-calcium collisions at 400 MeV.
