Abstract

A microscopic nuclear-structure calculation of the detour contribution to the internal bremsstrahlung spectrum of the first-forbidden unique electron-capture transition 204 Tl(2 − g.s. ) → 204 Hg(0 + g.s. ) is carried out. The framework of the quasiparticle random phase approximation has been used to calculate the Gamow-Teller and electric dipole strength distributions in 204Tl and 204Hg. Comparison of the present result with the possible detour contribution deduced from experimentally known cases ( 41Ca and 59Ni) suggests that in general the detour transitions could very well solve the long-standing discrepancy between the experimental and theoretical internal bremsstrahlung spectra.
