Abstract

Large hexadecapole transition strengths to the y·vibrational bands recently observed in even· even rare·earth nuclei are investigated microscopically. It is revealed that the property of the matrix elements of the hexadecapole operator and the subshell structure of the Nilsson single· particle Hamiltonian determine the characteristic (N, Z)·dependence of the hexadecapole strengths. The effects of the hexadecapole correlation are analysed in detail.
