Abstract

A multiweek undergraduate laboratory involving the microscale synthesis of porphyrins and the corresponding metalloporphyrins is presented. All of the synthetic products are isolated as solid compounds, allowing for their analysis by UV–visible and 1H NMR spectroscopy. A Zn(II) porphyrin is representative of regular metalloporphyrins in which the metal is a closed-shell (d0 or d10) with little metal-to-ligand π backbonding. Ni(II) porphyrins are representative of hypsoporphyrins in which the metals are of d6 through d9, have filled dÏ€ orbitals and exhibit significant metal dπ-to-porphyrin π* backbonding. The correlation of spectral data with the nature of the metal to porphyrin interaction is presented.
