Abstract

Mi(cro)RNAs are a novel class of small non-coding RNAs known to regulate a variety of biologic and metabolic processes. Their precise role in obese humans remains undefined. We aimed to characterize and compare miRNA expression profiles between obese and nonobese adipose tissue, and between human omental and subcutaneous fat. We wished to establish whether circulating miRNA levels were useful biomarkers for obesity and the metabolic syndrome, in particular, as potential tools for selecting appropriate candidates for bariatric surgery.
