Abstract

In a microradiographic study of coronal dentine in premolars from children, the zones of varying mineral content in the dentine close to the predentine have received particular attention. A zone with relatively high mineral content was observed close to the dentine/predentine border, and the width of this zone was dependent on the age or on the stage of development of the tooth. Adjacent to it, a fairly broad zone with low mineral content was found. Highly mineralized peritubular areas could be demonstrated in the bulk of dentine, but not in the two zones mentioned above. The variation in mineral content in these zones was considered to be mainly due to variation in the mineralization of the intertubular matrix.
