Abstract

The use of microprocessors in traffic tolling systems is discussed with reference to a characteristic system, whose operations are outlined. The implementation of such a system, as carried out by ARC, is described, with the system philosophy, program structure and phases of development. Particular attention is drawn to the advantages of replacing hard-wired logic with microprocessors. From a systems point of view, the distribution of intelligence to subsystems enabled by microprocessors leads to an enhanced overall system integrity; from a marketing point of view, microprocessors enable greater flexibility in a product line.
