Abstract
Background of prevailing approach of Control & Instrumentation installations in Indian industries and how ECIL has catered to the needs is given. With reference to the present trend of distributed and hierarchical systems, ECIL's plan and its approach and selection of standard building blocks are enumerated. Details of hardware and software blocks of a parallel redundant programmable controller system developed for a specific application are presented. Modularity and flexibility for incorporating changes and improvements are clearly brought out. Results so far achieved and enhancements planned are listed.
