Abstract

Vapor-deposited amorphous solid water (ASW) is ubiquitous in astronomical environments like interstellar grains, icy satellites, comets, and planetary rings, and artificial environments on Earth. This chapter reviews some of the extraordinary properties of ASW, especially those affected by the presence of microporosity. There is an emphasis on the most recent experiments performed under ultrahigh vacuum since enormous amounts of gas, whose effects are not wellunderstood, can be adsorbed by ASW from its environment. Several instances are given where the properties of ASW play a role in icy grains in interstellar space and on the icy surfaces of satellites in the outer solar system. The chapter concludes with a summary list of unsolved questions and needs for further theoretical and experimental studies.
