Abstract

Six wheat cultivars were grown in a controlled environment cabinet at 15C for up to 30 days in pots containing a manganese (Mn) deficient calcareous soil. Significant differences were found between cultivars for dry matter production, Mn concentration and Mn uptake with 10 or 50 mg k‐1 Mn added but not without added Mn. In contrast, cultivar differences were small for parameters associated with plant utilisation of Mn: chlorophyll a fluorescence induction kinetics (Fo, Fp, Fv, Fo/Fv and Fv/Fp), chlorophyll concentration and the critical Mn concentration for photosynthetic efficiency (as measured by Fv/Fp). The critical Mn concentration for Fv/Fp was approx. 13–15 μg g‐1, whilst that for relative shoot growth ranged from 12–17 μg g‐1.
