Abstract

There are numerous types of paddy soils which occur extensively in large areas in China. Each of them has its specific characteristics of soil fertility. The Chinese peasants through long practice of production have well recognized the fertility of paddy soils in the field, and many Chinese soil scientists have done a series of researches for characterizing the various types of the paddy soils(1,2) Present paper reports that micromorphological features can be used as additional criteria for the judgement of soil fertility. About 180 thin sections of paddy soils of different fertility were examined using a polarizing microscope, and the relationship between the micromorphological features and the characteristics of soil fertility was studied.
