Abstract

The effect of viscosity on micromixing, mixing on the molecular scale, is investigated by means of a Chemical Quenching Apparatus for fast kinetics, measuring the rate constant of a well known diazo coupling reaction in different viscous solutions. Experimental results are presented which show that increasing the viscosity or decreasing the flow rate through the reaction zone decreases the apparent kinetic constant. A fitting model taking into account both mass-transfer and reaction is proposed. By the regression analysis of the experimental data the model parameters (kinetic constant and mass-transfer coefficient) are estimated. The mass-transfer coefficient suggests a method for evaluation of micromixing level of apparatus and special mixers, typically used to study fast reactions.
