Abstract

Micromechanical spectroscopy is a sensitive probe of phase transitions occurring in semicrystalline polymers. We used this approach to investigate the effect of irradiation on phase transitions in ferroelectric PVDF-TrFE copolymers. It appears that the glass-rubber transition and the Curie transition are both affected by bombardment with fast electrons, but in a different way. The observed changes in the elastic modulus, mechanical losses and thermal expansion results are consistent with a decrease in the degree of crystallinity.
