Abstract

A single-sided optics with electrical beam control for microholographic recording has been proposed, and its principle has been experimentally demonstrated. The recording medium has a quarter-wave layer and a reflective layer, which makes it possible to restrict an unwanted interference during recording and to eliminate an unwanted beam during readout, thereby improving the recording and readout performances. Liquid crystal deflectors and liquid crystal variable-focus lenses were used for electrical beam control, which leads to high reliability and low power consumption. The former and the latter move the focal position in the in-plane and vertical directions, respectively. Three bits were successfully recorded and read out in both the in-plane and vertical directions. Future work includes the development and demonstration of a coaxial single-sided optics, which features robustness and simplicity.
